Welcome
Since 1999, the Winchester Artists Network (WAN) has been working to make art an important part of the community. Visit the links herein for more information about who we are, what we are doing, what our artists are doing, and how to become a member of WAN. We encourage you to visit galleries in town showcasing the work of some of our many artist members. Below is a sampling of the many opportunities for WAN artists to connect through events in Winchester during the year.
Winchester Artists Network Library Show Honors Connections to Town
in Celebration of 175th Anniversary!
On View May 1-31 with Opening Reception Saturday, May 3, 3-5pm
The Winchester Artists Network annual member show opens at Winchester Library on May 1. Featuring over 20 pieces from 18 artists, the art will be on display throughout the Library during May. This year’s show is especially notable as it includes personal statements from the artists highlighting their connections to the Town of Winchester, in tribute to the Town’s celebration of its 175th anniversary.
Many of the artists speak to the inspiration they receive from the natural beauty of Winchester’s gardens, parks and forested areas. As watercolor painter Elizabeth Hardjono states, “Nature around Winchester town has always provided me with inspiration to capture the essence of the fleeting moment and to represent these as abstract lines, colors and structures.”
Rose Walsh-Cooke uses the charming downtown as muse for some of her oil paintings, “Winchester continues to inspire me and I have painted a few local scenes over the years.” Whether through natural landscapes or community offerings, it is evident that Winchester offers much to motivate these artists in their work. The art on view includes oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, photography, textiles, woodblock print, collage and mixed media.
Participating artists include: Theodore Cantrell, Diane Davies, Fenway Fan, David Feigenbaum, Trish Gannon, Elizabeth Hardjono, Thomas Hardjono, Mary Hummon, David Hummon, Ruth Lieberherr, Deb O’Brien, Jay Sullivan, Cristy Walsh, Rose Walsh-Cooke, Martina Werner, John M. Williams, Meg Steele Wingerath and Kiyomi Yatsuhashi.
Winchester Artists Network partners with the Winchester Public Library each May for an Annual Members Show, Art in the Library. The exhibition features talented WAN artists, with artwork on display throughout the library, including for example oil paintings, watercolors, acrylic paintings, collage, pastels, photography, textile art, ceramics, and mixed media work. A special Exhibit Reception provides visitors with the opportunity to meet participating artists. Sponsored by the Winchester Cultural Council,
businesses and artists collaborate to turn the downtown area into an arts colony for Art in August. During the month, creations of local artists are on display in windows and inside shops in downtown Winchester. In addition, the Griffin Museum of Photography graciously hosts an opening reception for all of the community to kick off the month, and smaller meet-the-artist receptions are held at some of the local businesses on Thursday evenings. For one Saturday in August, local artists also partner with Winchester Farmers Market for Art in the Park, a full day of arts activities on the Common.
Winchester Open Studios is a town-wide cultural exhibition and marketplace taking place in November each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Winchester artists are among the over 50 exhibitors in multiple locations throughout town including the Indoor Farmers Market at the Jenks Center, the Winchester Unitarian Society, the First Congregational Church, Studio on the Common, the Griffin Museum, and several others.

Through the dedication of the Winchester Augmented Reality Team (WART), the use of augmented reality is available to enhance some of Winchester's foremost art exhibits, including Art in August, Open Studios and the Riverwalk sculptures in the Winchester Cultural District. You can learn more about WART's efforts and connecting your work with AR through the Hoverlay app here: https://www.wart.win/.
Other individual exhibits and opportunities are shared throughout the year via the WAN list serve, so be sure to sign up as a WAN member to stay tuned to what's happening in and around the arts community! And for "everything" going on in Winchester, check out www.towncommon.org.
